This booklet provides information about the epilepsies and outlines the state of progress made in the past decade toward achieving the Epilepsy Research Benchmarks, a set of widely recognized objectives aimed at prioritizing the efforts of scientists and health care providers to find cures for the epilepsies. Much of this work has been funded by grants from the NINDS. New discoveries about the causes of the epilepsies and the development of new treatment strategies are discussed. The booklet also highlights research to reduce the risk of conditions that co-occur with the epilepsies, including sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP). The booklet is intended for anyone who wants to learn about promises in the research of the epilepsies, from people who have epilepsy and their families to scientists and policymakers.
